What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of medicine that focuses upon the correlation between the spine and overall health. Ancient Chinese and Greek healers were among the first to recognize this powerful connection. In fact, the “father of medicine” Hippocrates, is recorded as saying, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” Modern day chiropractic works with this link between the spine and the nervous system to draw upon the body’s inherent healing response.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

During a chiropractic treatment, the chiropractor performs a gentle “adjustment” which corrects minor misalignments of the spinal vertebrae to remove nerve interference. The adjustment gently moves the spinal vertebra back into its proper position. This helps to eliminate nerve interference, which then ultimately enables the body to heal itself.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?

Through years of experience, Dr. Mixon has developed advanced techniques that are extremely gentle. Most patients find chiropractic treatment very refreshing, and often feel immediate relief.

Are chiropractors “real” doctors?

Yes, just like a medical doctor, chiropractors undergo many years of extensive study and training to earn their doctorate. All chiropractors must pass national board examinations and be licensed within their state. In addition, each year Dr. Mixon takes continuing education courses that keep him abreast of the latest medical research and developments.

Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are classified as physicians by Medicare.

Why is the spine so important?

A healthy, properly aligned spine is critical to good health. This is because the nervous system is made up of the brain, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. This complex system connects the brain to the entire body. If the nerves or spinal column is compressed or injured in any way, the flow of information to the brain is hindered. Initial symptoms may show up as mild neck or back pain . However if left untreated, degeneration or disease may develop.

Has Chiropractic care been researched by scientists?

Yes. Many scientific studies have proven that chiropractic treatment is safe, effective, and helpful for problems of the joints and spine. Additional studies document high patient satisfaction rates, and the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care. Many of these studies are available to the public and can be found online.

Is Chiropractic treatment recommended for senior citizens?

In most cases, yes. Chiropractic care is very safe, even for senior citizens. Dr. Mixon has successfully treated patients well into their nineties.

Do children need Chiropractic care too?

Yes. Chiropractic treatment can be very beneficial for children. Sport related injuries, auto accidents and falls can create minor joint and spine problems. If left uncorrected these problems can become larger problems in adulthood.

Are preventive or “maintenance” chiropractic treatments recommended?

Yes. Taking care of the spine is something that should be done throughout a person’s life. Just as people benefit from routine dental cleanings and eye exams, likewise people benefit from “wellness” chiropractic appointments. Many people find that occaisonal chiropractic treatments keep their joints functioning well and their neck and back pain free. Other patients report improvement in overall health.
