The Three Phases of Chiropractic Care at Texas Spine & Wellness

Plenty of patients have asked me the same question over the years: ‘Doc, how long does it take to heal?’ It’s a good question, but it differs so much from one patient to the next, that it’s challenging to give a standard answer. The fact is, we all heal at different rates and speeds.

However, with that in mind, I decided to put together a little information about the 3 phases of chiropractic care, which I believe can shed light on the question of how long it takes to heal.

Phase 1 – the relief phase

This is the first step to regaining your health and your life. When most people arrive at the Texas Spine & Wellness office they are suffering from the effects of accidents, falls, injuries, stress and bad posture that they’ve endured over many years. This relief phase of chiropractic care is designed to quickly reduce their pain and discomfort.

During this phase, a patient sometimes comes in two or three times over the course of a week. Scheduling appointments close together helps to reduce the pain and starts putting the spinal bones back in their proper position.

During Phase 1 a patient needs plenty of rest, lots of water, and, most importantly, a positive attitude.

Phase 2 – the correction phase

During Phase 2 we focus on the spinal deviations that are causing pain, the vertebral misalignments. During this phase as your chiropractor, I may choose to diversify the type of chiropractic adjustments you receive. This phase of chiropractic care is much more important than the relief phase as it is designed to put the structures of the spine into correct position and bring the benefits of long-term health. It will also continue to provide pain relief.

Phase 3 – the maintenance phase

Once you have come to Phase 3 you will be feeling much, much better and may not have any more outward symptoms. Your pain is reduced or has gone away completely, the swelling and discomfort is probably gone, and you’re feeling like your ‘old self’ again.

Keep in mind, however, the spinal misalignments, can always come back if you start to fall back into old habits.

The purpose of the maintenance phase is just that, to maintain the excellent results we have achieved and keep your spine healthy for the future. Based upon your unique situation, and my experience as a Garland Chiropractor, I will recommend future visits to maintain the health of your spine.

This is one of the most important phases, because if done correctly, it can mean a lifetime of good health and much less pain. Like your regular dental checkups, maintaining your spine is an important part of staying healthy and preventing future problems. Remember, an absence of symptoms does not always mean an absence of problems. One of the most important things you can do for your health is to maintain your spine, and the best place to do that is right here at Texas Spine & Wellness.

This is a brief explanation of the 3 phases of chiropractic care and how treatment works best. Although the timeline may vary, if you follow the advice I’ve offered and have a little patience, your results will likely be the same.

So take a tip from your chiropractor and schedule an appointment at Texas Spine & Wellness today. We’ll get you back on track as quickly as possible.

Image of a man who needs arthritis pain relief
Every day I treat patients who are looking for arthritis pain relief. As a Garland chiropractor, I know there are many ways to reduce the effects of this painful disease. That’s why we have compiled 10 outstanding tips to help you get relief from joint stiffness and pain. These effective tips have been gathered from chiropractors and arthritis experts and can make living with arthritis a little bit easier.

Get stretching for arthritis pain relief

Stretching should become a part of your daily activities. A simple stretching routine can help you avoid injuries by warming up tendons and muscles making them more flexible and less prone to tear. Set aside at least 10 minutes every day for stretches and work out the major muscle groups.

Keep moving

You can reduce joint stiffness and pain by staying active. Exercise will also increase muscle strength and help you maintain mobility. A wonderful side benefit of exercise is the stress relief, weight control and an overall sense of well-being. You can find information about low impact classes and water exercise through the Arthritis Foundation.

Protect your joints

Don’t stay in same position for a prolonged period of time. Balance work and rest throughout the day. Try not to place too much strain on weaker joints.

Cool down

When you experience arthritis pain and swelling, stop your physical activity and take a break. Ideally it is best to find a shady, cool spot in which to rest. Spray or mist your joints with cold water. Alternately, wrap a cold compress or an ice pack around the affected joints.

Get a massage

Therapeutic massage can provide arthritis pain relief and soothe sore muscles. Licensed massage therapists are specially trained to help reduce areas of swelling and inflammation.

Get your weight under control

Even a few extra pounds can add stress and strain to you weight-bearing joints and may add to the pain of arthritis. Recent studies have proven that just by dropping a few pounds you can lower the risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knee. The advancement of arthritis can also be slowed by normalizing your body weight.

Get a proper diagnosis

If you has pain, stiffness and swelling for longer than one week you may wish to see your doctor to get a diagnosis. There are more than one hundred different types of arthritis. To better understand your condition, and to know how best to take care of yourself, it is vital to know the kind of arthritis you have.

Visit a chiropractor

Fortunately, your choices are not limited to pain medications and steroid injections. There many alternative therapies that can be helpful to arthritis patients. Chiropractic treatment can help by keeping the spine and joints properly aligned and functioning well.

Consider laser therapy

Cold and hot laser therapy have helped many people cope with the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Laser therapy can help decrease inflammation and diminish pain. Your Garland Chiropractor can discuss this treatment option with you.

Keep informed

It is helpful to keep learning about new research and advances in the treatment of arthritis. You can find a great deal of valuable information online. If you feel you would benefit from support groups, check out online forums and become a part of a group.

How to Find the Right Chiropractor in Garland

Just like selecting the best restaurant or choosing your favorite football team, everyone has an opinion on how to choose a great chiropractor in Garland.  While you might might absolutely love Dr. John, your neighbor might not. In many cases, in comes down to a matter of personal preference.

That being said, there are certain guidelines you might use when looking for the ‘right’ chiropractor.

One must-have feature of a good chiropractor is his or her ability to communicate. Most people, especially when they visit a chiropractor in Garland for the first time, are completely unaware of the virtues of chiropractic medicine, the reason for chiropractic treatment, and why the spine is so important to health. Part of being a good Doctor of Chiropractic is being a great communicator and educator and helping patients understand the benefits of chiropractic treatment.

But, of course, the most important factor is the doctor’s ability and skill. With the advent of online patient reviews, finding an experienced, quality chiropractor in Garland has become easier than ever. There are many popular review sites, like Yelp, Insider pages and Angie’s list that can offer valuable insight into a doctor’s assets and strengths. But today, just as in years gone by, one of the most dependable ways to find a great chiropractor may be through a personal recommendation from a friend, co-worker or family member.

A large part of your decision should also reflect your dealings with the chiropractic office itself. The fact is, you don’t just deal with the doctor when you go to his clinic, you deal with the people on his or her staff, from the front-desk staff to the massage therapist to the chiropractic assistant. One of the hallmarks of a great practice is that every staff member is always polite, friendly and caring.

If you go to a chiropractor who is nice to you, but his office manager is distant, the massage therapist is a snob and the vibe that you get is ‘we don’t care, we just work here’ then you would be advised to find another chiropractor. (And, of course, the doctor should find better staff…)

Remember, when your spine is properly aligned and the nervous system is working correctly, not only will you experience pain relief, you will stay healthier, and  hopefully will live longer than people who never go a chiropractor in Garland.

Like taking care of your teeth and getting regular check-ups, getting your spine adjusted on a regular basis will have long-term health benefits that are too numerous to tally. Definitely less pain, but also less disease, less damage, less degeneration and less suffering.

Texas Spine & Wellness offers an added benefit. We are an integrated chiropractic practice, have a full rehab center, offer laser therapy, therapeutic massage and spinal decompression therapy. As an integrated chiropractic practice we have a MD who supervises our clinic, and a Nurse practitioner who works directly with Dr. Mixon and his associates. Having both a nurse practitioner and chiropractors ensures you’ll receive the best of traditional and alternative medicine. Our complete rehab center can help patients with everything from neck and back injuries, to strengthening injured shoulders and knees.

In conclusion, the ways to find a chiropractor will vary, but remember these tips… The ‘right’ doctor is one that keeps your health in the forefront, has an excellent staff, the proper equipment and therapies, communicates effectively, and whose skill encourages patient referrals.

Why not take the first step today? We believe within no time, you’ll be feeling better and living a healthier, more productive life.
